This hot cocoa is the best because it delivers on the taste and cozy vibes without the processed ingredients. You will try this and never go back to those packets again. Also, why do tea every night when this deliciousness exists?

The reason I love this recipe so much? These ingredients are very healthy and unprocessed. The cacao powder is what we use in our brownies and has many nutrients. Any milk will work with this recipe. I typically use whole milk for my kids and almond milk for myself. The kids love this hot chocolate by the way.

The coconut oil gives this drink its creaminess and also lends its health benefits. You can leave it out if you like though, it will not compromise the beverage. The maple syrup can easily be swapped for some honey and you can use 1 tablespoon or 2 if you like it sweet. Please do not skip the nutmeg. It literally sets this recipe apart from the rest.

Toppings are optional. I love to use vegan marshmallows and definitely a sprinkle or two of cinnamon. I also sometimes add whipped cream and chocolate shavings for extra sipping fun.

Instructions

  • Heat your milk in a small pot until warm (not boiling). Whisk in the maple syrup (1 or 2 tbs depending on how sweet you like it), coconut oil and quick small dash of nutmeg. Then add in the cacao powder and whisk continuously until heated through and no more cacao powder clumps exist – about 2-3 minutes.

Notes

You can sub in any milk.
You can sub in honey for the maple syrup.
I also sometimes add a dash of vanilla extract and pinch of salt.
You can also top it with chocolate shavings or whip cream.
