Cabbage and Feta Salad
I cannot describe how yummy and simple this salad/slaw is to throw together. The perfect side dish or main attraction. You can throw in some grilled chicken or fish and have a complete meal.
The ingredients:
FYI: red cabbage can be referred to as purple cabbage; same thing. Make sure to slice your cabbage thin and then cross chop it into small pieces for a smooth chewing experience. This way, the dressing gets to every crevice of the salad. A good olive oil is imperative for this salad/slaw. The limes bring that fresh flavor with zest and juice included. The dried dates are a sweet surprise, when you’re lucky enough to get one on your spoon/fork. The feta adds the saltiness and creaminess to the dish. I cannot stress enough how important fresh herbs are to most every dish. The fresh dill in this salad really gets the flavor party started. I also especially love the taste and extra crunch of the toasted sesame seeds.
Substitutions:
In most cases, we don’t have all the ingredients on a recipe list so I’m here to provide you with some substitutions. You can use white or green cabbage in this recipe. The olive oil can be replaced with sesame oil, avocado oil or peanut oil. The lime juice and zest with lemons. Raisins or dried cranberries can be used in place of the dates. And fresh parsley or cilantro can stand in for the dill.
When I have the time, I really prefer to let this salad sit, break down and soak up all the dressing. It’s not necessary, just recommended.

Cabbage and Feta Salad
Ingredients
Instructions
- In a large bowl, massage the cabbage shreds, olive oil, lime juice, zest, salt and chili pepper flakes to taste, until well coated.
- Next, mix in the feta, honey, dates, dill and sesame seeds. Taste and adjust seasonings, oil, lime or honey (if necessary).
- I like to make this in advance and let it sit for an hour or more prior to consumption.
Notes
- Red cabbage is also known as purple cabbage.
- You can use lime or lemon juice and zest.
- Raisins or dried cranberries can be subbed in for the dates.
- Feta cheese can be subbed in with Cotija cheese.
- You can sub in maple syrup for the honey.
- If you’re adverse to dill, feel free to sub in fresh parsley or cilantro.
- Make sure you toast your sesame seeds; it makes a world of difference.
- Store leftovers in your fridge.
Much enjoyed for a work lunch where we had to bring a dish to share. Thanks for the recipe 🙂
Made this yesterday and loved it! The fresh dill and toasted sesame seeds are a game changer – would’ve never thought of it on my own. Thank you!
I typically avoid salads, mostly because I’m allergic to most raw veggies …. This however was AMAZING. Not only am I not allergic to anything in it (huge bonus) but it’s so flavorful and yummy that I actually look forward to eating it lasts a few days so I’m not chopping all the time ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you!!!
