This chicken and cabbage is an incredibly simple, healthy and delicious one pan meal! Its packed with fiber and protein too.
If you love easy delicious meals that come together in one pan – you are currently in the right spot. My entire family loved this dish and I loved making it. It’s gluten free and has the protein and veggies come together in one pan for easy clean up.

If you don’t have green cabbage, you can use red/purple cabbage but the end result of color will change. You can also use chicken breasts instead of thighs if that’s what you have.

Thank you for supporting Hungry Happens! I hope you enjoy making this dish as much as I loved creating it! If you could take the time to comment and rate the recipe, we would greatly appreciate it! LOVE YOUR LIFE!

One Pan Chicken and Cabbage
Ingredients
- 1½ lbs (0.68 kg) boneless skinless chicken thighs
- salt, onion powder, garlic powder + paprika
- 3 tbs olive oil
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbs tomato paste
- 1 medium head green cabbage, sliced thin
- 2 medium carrots, coarsely grated
- 1½ cups (350 ml) low sodium chicken broth
- 2 tsp paprika
- salt and pepper, to taste
- garnish: fresh parsley
Instructions
- Cut your chicken into small pieces. Season them generously with salt, onion powder and garlic powder.
- In a large deep skillet, heat the oil. Once hot, add in the chicken and cook for 6 minutes – or until browned on both sides. Next add in the onion and saute for 2 minutes. Stir in the garlic for 30 seconds and then the tomato paste too.
- Next mix in the cabbage shreds for a minute or two until coated and slightly wilted down, then mix in the carrot shreds and then finally add in the broth and seasonings. Bring to a simmer and lower the heat to continue the simmer cook, stirring occasionaly, for about 10-15 minutes or until the liquid has evaporated. Top with parsley and enjoy!
The only thing I’d change is omitting the tomato paste. Don’t know gunk it adds much and masks the taste of the cabbage and carrots. Add a little bacon sometimes too.
Great recipe and tasty! Reduced the garlic because my husband doesn’t like garlic but it still came out wonderful.
This one is fantastic, better than any Chicken Paprikas I’ve had at a restaurant!
Hi Rhonda, thats great – I’m glad you loved the dish!
How much of each spice do we use please looks really yummy
Good ♥️
It sounds delicious! I will replace the onion and garlic powder with fresh garlic and chopped onions. Cabbage and onions, where could I go wrong? Maybe with some pierogis or rice? Dinner tonight!
Sounds great with either of those two options! Enjoy!
I love Stella’s skillets, and this one is no exception. I did spice it up a bit with red peper flakes, which I love. I also put it over a bit of rice. Thanks again for your inventive recipes, Stella!
Very easy recipe to make taste is good. Loved the chicken and cabbages together. Added some slice carrots.
THanks for trying it Barbara!
For people like myself received need to have amounts for spices. This would give a starting point. Just to say onion powder. and a list of spices is a non starter. Non cooks follow receipts for a reason. We need starting points the first time
This was the perfect recipe for using up some left over ingredients in my mother’s pantry and freezer. It’s nothing I would have put together on my own but it was surprisingly good. My carrots were frozen slices and I left them as is, which I think I preferred over shredded. People who say it’s bland may not be “generously” seasoning the chicken as instructed. That’s where a lot of the flavor comes from and I think it helps with thickening the sauce as well. Would make again.
Smoked paprika is mentioned twice in the ingredients and not at all in the instructions, pls elaborate, thanks!
I was really excited to make this dish. As some have noted, it does lack a little flavour and chew. I am not sure what could have helped to change the profile – perhaps some mustard or red wine or sundried tomatoes to get more umami. I felt like the cabbage and carrots melted away too much too. I ended up adding some frozen peas and carrots for some pop and extra flavour. I do like it and will try again with some flavour punches. Came together easily in one pan with pantry ingredients.
gonna make this tomorrow Sept 27th 2025 😉 .. I love to cook..
going to make this. thank you for the recipe.
