One pan meals are the so elite and the choicest of dinners. Especially when you cover all the food groups and everyone in the family is happy. We have our protein with the chicken, the fiber in our broccoli and our grain in our rice. Done and done.
The simple honey garlic sauce in this recipe is the element that really sends this dish over the top. I don’t mind eating this without the sauce either but if you’re looking for something special and super similar to takeout – this is it. You will be licking your utensils at the end.

One Pan Honey Garlic Chicken Broccoli Rice
Ingredients
Marinade:
- 1½ lbs chicken breasts, 2" cubed
- 2 tbs sesame oil or olive oil
- 2 tbs low sodium soy sauce *
- 1 tbs Sriracha sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
One Pan:
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large head broccoli, cut into florets
- 1 cup uncooked basmati rice
- 3¾ cups low sodium chicken broth (or water)
- 1/2 tsp Italian dried herb blend
Honey Garlic Sauce for Serving:
- 1 tbs toasted sesame oil
- 2 tbs low sodium soy sauce *
- 1 tsp Sriracha sauce
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tbs ginger, minced
- 2-3 tbs honey
Optional Toppings:
- diced scallions + toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
Chicken Marinade:
- Combine your chicken cubes with the sesame oil, soy sauce, Sriracha and garlic powder. You can cover and marinade overnight or 1 hour.
One Pan:
- Heat a large deep skillet on medium high. Add in the chicken and spread out evenly in one layer. Cook for 3-4 minutes then flip and cook for another 3 minutes.
- Next, make an empty circle in the center of the pan and add in the onion and saute for 2 minutes. Add a little oil if needed. Stir in the garlic for 30 seconds. Now toss in the broccoli, rice and chicken broth. Mix everything together and bring to a boil. Cover the pan and lower the heat to a simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes or until the rice is done. (It may need more broth or water if the rice isn't done and the liquids in the pan have evaporated).
Honey Garlic Sauce:
- Whisk together the toasted sesame oil, soy sauce, Sriracha, garlic, ginger and honey. Taste the sauce and adjust anything if needed. Pour this sauce on the finished chicken and rice dish and garnish with scallions and toasted sesame seeds.
I made this a couple of weeks ago and loved it!! Could I make this in a slow cooker, and would you know how long I should leave it in?
When do you put in the Italian seasoning? It is in the ingredients list but not in the instructions. Please clarify if that is something you include or not. Thanks.
What is a good substitute for siracha sauce?
Hi Kristy, any hot sauce works here – Franks hot sauce, Cholula hot sauce, etc.
Could I do this in a crockpot?
I’m just curious if you think I can use minute rice with this? Would the broccoli be undercooked?
What are your thoughts?
Hi I’m an Instagram follower. And love your recripes and presentation. I ve tried your recipes with success but this one was not a home run . The tastes were wonderful but the broccoli was soft and the rice was wet not fluffy .. any thoughts ? I want to remake ad the flavors were really good .
Hi Sam, thank you so much for trying out my recipes and supporting us on IG!
I’m sorry this didnt work out for you though as expected. Maybe hold off on adding the broccoli until the end of the cooking process and add a little less liquid to cook the rice next time. Different types of rice take different amounts of time to cook so that’s probably it. Try to go off the package instructions of your rice.. that might help better cook the dish. Good luck!
Made this tonight and wasn’t disappointed. Sprinkled coriander as I didn’t have spring onions and used sweet chilli sauce and added som chilli oil. Delish.
HI Kim, glad you enjoyed the recipe!
Sorry but way too much liquid. I kept trying to cook it down and it became a soggy mess. Less liquid would probably make it much better.
HI Jessica, sorry the recipe didnt work out for you! I think different rice brands have different cook times and liquid amounts. That might be it. AGain i’m sorry the recipe did not turn out great
Same for me, liquid did not evaporate turned into big soggy mess, sad waste of chicken and everything. Uggh
Can I use white rice? Do I have to adjust anything ? Just realized I don’t have basmati and wanted to make tonight!
Hi Ashley, sorry I just saw this.. yes you can use white rice. Basmati is white rice
If you are reading the comments to see if you should try this recipe the answer is YES! Everything I have tried comes out just as predicted and tastes amazing.
Thanks for the glowing review Kimberly!!! Glad you liked it
Made this tonight and my entire family loved it! That’s saying something because it’s not easy to find something both my kids will eat! Definitely going into the rotation!
Hi Amanda, best compliment! Thank you for the super sweet review!
Very tasty. I can see why you add the chopped spring onions and toasted sesame seeds to give it a bit more colour but can’t fault the flavour. First time I’ve cooked/tried Sriracha. It really gives the food a zing.
I will enjoy trying out some of your other dishes.
Thanks
Hi Simon, Love to read your review! Thanks for trying out this recipe! Glad you liked it!
This is one of the few times where everyone in my house asked for seconds! Definitely going into rotation thank you for this recipe!
Hi REbecca, So happy you enjoyed! And thanks for trying it out!
Soooo good! 🤯
glad you liked it and thanks for the rating!
Is it the right quantity for the chicken broth? Usually, for 1 cup of rice, we need to put 2 cups of water?
Hi Carole, since there are other ingredients in the pan, you have to account for the increase in broth.
Can I use brown rice instead – is there a different cooking time for this?
Hi Riv, yes you can but will require more liquid broth or water and I know brown rice takes more cook time so the broccoli might get too mushy in the process. Maybe cook the brown rice separate if the package states more than 20-25 minutes cook time.
