1905 Salad (Columbia’s Salad)
So you’re probably wondering where the name 1905 comes from. I found this recipe on TikTok and it looked so good, I had to give a swing. I did some research and found out that the salad hales from a restaurant chain in Florida named Columbia Restaurant and their famous salad was christened the 1905 Salad because that was the year they opened up their first store.
My favorite part of this salad is definitely the dressing with that not-so-typical Worcestershire sauce ingredient. And I loved the julienned ham and Swiss cheese as well. There is no part of me that doesn’t appreciate a great NO COOKING REQUIRED dish.
Thank you for swinging by Hungry Happens! If you create this dish or any other, we would greatly appreciate you taking the time to comment and rate the recipe! LOVE YOUR LIFE!
The 1905 Salad (Columbia’s Salad)
Ingredients
Dressing:
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 2 tbs lemon juice
- 1-2 tbs white wine vinegar
- 1-2 tbs Worcestershire sauce
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- salt and pepper to taste
Salad:
- 1 head iceberg lettuce, shredded
- 1/2 lb ham slices, julienned
- 1/3 lb Swiss cheese slices, julienned
- 10 oz cherry tomatoes, halved
- 5 oz green olives, sliced
- 1/2 red onion, sliced thin
- 5 oz croutons
- 2 oz Parmesano Reggiano cheese, grated
Instructions
Dressing:
- If serving immediately, whisk together all of your ingredients at the bottom of your large salad bowl. Taste and adjust the flavors if needed. Set aside.
Salad:
- Combine all of your prepped ingredients in the salad bowl and toss with the dressing thoroughly to coat all. I like to top mine with extra freshly grated parmesan right before I serve to the table. Also some scrunches of black pepper.
Sorry the original 1905 salad from the Columbia Restaurant does not have onion in it. I lived in FL and ate at this location.

Thank you so much….Enjoy 🙂
The only substitutes i made was bridgeford turkey pepperoni instead of ham and pepperocinis instead of olives. One of the best salads I’ve had!!!
Hi Laila, Yessss – great sub in! I’m glad you enjoyed the salad!
hi! I have a question what can I use instead of Worcestershire sauce?
Hi Victoria, soy sauce would work!
This is not the original 1905 salad. It is similar though. Had it last week at the Columbia Restaurant.
Drool! I use romaine lettuce but everything else the same and I find myself craving the salad a few times a month! So good!
Made this tonight (without croutons) and hubby and I loved it! Thanks again for a wonderful dinner🤗❣️
This looks SO good! I love salads but my issue is I get sick of the same thing over and over again so I am always reinventing my salads, trying different ones, using different dressings, etc. This one kind of reminds me of a more Americanized Chef or Cobb Salad.
Sodium is a tad high but I can fix that easily! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Kristi, Yes, i agree with you – i’m always bored of the same old dressing and salad too! This recipe is a great one and please also check out my La Scala Salad as an option that is different. I have many salads on the site too that are different than the usual. Thank you! Cheers!
Stella, i have been making this recipe for a year after I saw your post then. It’s a family favorite and sometimes more than once per week! We also tweet it depending on what meats and cheeses we have available. We also make the dressing separately and keep that on hand do other salads.
Hello Anna! I think it’s great that your family loves it, and they probably love you even more since you make it haha!
Every time I go to the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City, Tampa I order this salad. In some of the Publix groceries here you can find the dressing. I bought the cookbook from the restaurant and I love making it myself. It has become one of my favorite salads ever. The atmosphere at the original restaurant makes it taste even better.
ive made this salad so many times! it’s delicious filling and so refreshing. we eat this throughout the summer months.

It’s so funny how one recipe will show up for a popular dish and every food blogger will then copy that recipe and you have a dozen different bloggers with the same recipe, and yet none of them are correct. The actual 1905 salad dressing has anchovies and tamarind, without which it will not taste anything like the original. But hey, why not just copy the same incomplete recipe that’s identical to what’s on the other dozen food blogs.
Guess you never looked at the list of ingredients in Worchestershire sauce, because anchovies and tamarind are de rigueur.
